The successful remediation of contaminated sites is an effective and sustainable way of not only releasing land back for development and also re-instating true commercial value into land-based investments.

If contamination is encountered within the soils on the site, the Local Regulator will often require that this be appropriately remediated so as to demonstrate that there is no longer a risk to human health or the wider environment.  It is normal practice for conditions to be attached to developments, often in anticipation of contamination being encountered.  These conditions, once activated, can present technical challenges and cause unforeseen delays if not appropriately managed.

At EGC, we are able to assist you every step of the way to ensure that your project remains on-track and that your liabilities and responsibilities are appropriately and effectively handled. Through our experience and knowledge, we are able to pro-actively integrate aspects of the remedial and verification process into wider ground investigations.

There are typically three key stages to the remediation and verification process, however no two sites are the same;

Stage 1 :  Preparation of a Remediation Strategy

This sets out the basis for the activity which would need to be submitted to, and approved by, the Local Authority before the on-site activities

Stage 2 : Undertake Remediation

This involved the physical delineation, removal and disposal of the affected soils and / or the importation and placement of suitable clean soils, either as replacement material or as a capping layer

Stage 3 : Undertake a Verification Exercise

This documents and evidences that the remedial works have been undertaken correctly and have effectively achieved the design purpose of successfully removing the source of the contamination.

We have experience of assisting Clients with the following;

  • Delineation and removal of hydrocarbon contamination in soils arising from fuel spills
  • Assessment and remediation of soils including of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM)
  • Independent supervision and inspection of Underground Storage Tank (UST) removal
  • Design, specification and validation of capping layers
  • Preparation of Materials Management Plans (MMP)
