Fabric Survey Testing

Fabric Surveys and Concrete Testing

We undertake bespoke non-destructive surveys of structural members, columns and walls to determine concrete thickness and rebar arrangement (no. of layers, diameter and embedment depth) in order to inform and advance the design process and structural options appraisal.

With almost 20 years’ experience, we work with and provide fabric building surveys and concrete testing to a range of organisations including Local Authorities, architects, planners, private investors and house builders. We pride ourselves on honesty and professional integrity and never undertake or include cost elements within our projects that are not considered necessary and justified.

Our Fabric Surveys and Concrete Testing Services

The re-use and integration of existing structural elements into redevelopment projects is a cornerstone of modern sustainable engineering.  However, to place design reliance on an existing structure, especially when loading and stress conditions are subject to change, requires an evidenced knowledge of the internal fabric.

We use a variety of specialised Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), seismic and magnetic systems to accurately and efficiently map out and assess the internal reinforcement within concrete structures. The equipment we use is typically able to image through a cover layer up to 70cm thick and determine re-bar depth and diameter to within +/- 2mm.

These techniques are equally capable of identifying other structural features such as the location of hidden flues or voids, anchor ties within architectural masonry and building utilities. Below ground, we have experience in undertaking structural inspection of embedded piles as part of re-use feasibility studies and have used specialist seismic sounding techniques to assess length and integrity of driven pre-cast and cast-in-situ concrete piles.

If necessary, we can call on the services of experienced and qualified sub-contractors to undertake targeted core recovery sampling through structural elements as well as UKAS accredited mechanical / chemical testing.
